Energy Efficient Homes

Energy Efficient HomePeckham Custom Builders has built efficient homes for years. Using innovative and proven technologies, a careful site plan, thoughtful building design and proper use of materials, large homes do not have to translate into large energy bills.

The process begins with our site plan. We conduct a thorough review of the lot, understanding how the placement of the home and existing or planned improvements (driveways, trees, and view corridors), affects solar gain and how preservation of natural surroundings will affect the design. While keeping in mind the aesthetics and functionality of the home, the constraints of the lot and local building requirements, we position the home for proper solar orientation. Using generous eaves for shading and cross ventilation, proper placement of windows for natural light and the integration of natural buffers to shield the home from solar gain, we build in energy savings from the start. Inside, we use Energy Star technology to keep operating costs lower and to achieve an open, comfortable and energy efficient home.

Using the following techniques, we greatly increase the energy efficiency of your new, custom home:

Effective Insulation — Properly installed insulation helps achieve even temperatures throughout the house while using less energy. The result is lower utility costs and a quieter, more comfortable home. Our roof decking is heat reflective and our shingle materials have the thickness to create a roof which is both beautiful and acts as a radiant barrier. We use foam insulation where effective; closed cell insulation on exterior walls to avoid moisture build-up and open cell insulation on interior walls to maintain even temperatures and reduce noise transmission. In the attic, we typically use closed cell foam insulation over the air conditioning ducts and floor. We also deploy R38 of cellulous or fiberglass insulation to achieve higher energy efficiency

High-Performance Windows — Advanced wood or vinyl window designs with reflective coatings help keep heat in during winter and out during summer. These premium windows reduce energy consumption while also reducing damaging ultraviolet rays which can discolor carpets and furniture.

Tight Construction and Tight Ducts — Attention to detail by sealing holes, cracks, and seams during construction and before sheet rock is put in place, helps eliminate drafts, moisture, dust, pests, noise and pollen. Your home will be more comfortable and have lower maintenance costs.

Energy-Efficient Heating and Cooling Equipment — Efficient and properly sized heating and cooling systems use less energy. Properly sized systems turn on and off less frequently, remove more humidity and provide better comfort. We generally recommend a 16 seer variable speed control HVAC unit.

Smart Home Technologies – Employing “smart home” technologies to provide added comfort, luxury and convenience gives you more control of your energy usage. With a simple control pad or a command from your smart phone or laptop, you may control many aspects of your custom home including security, entertainment, heating, cooling, lighting, and ambience all at the touch of a finger. This optional technology allows home owners to better manage energy usage throughout their home.
